How happy hour works in South Korea
South Korea allows a posted drink discount. In Seoul the window that gets printed lives in hotel bars. A neighborhood hof has a price, not a clock.
The custom
Drinking comes with anju, something to eat. A hof, a pocha, or a sooljip charges one price all night and expects the table to order food. That is the ordinary night out, and it is not a happy hour. The timed offer — “happy hour,” 해피아워 — is a hotel product: a whisky bar in Gangnam, a lounge in Myeongdong, a river bar in Mapo. It usually runs from about 5 or 6 until 7:30 or 8, before the room turns into the late sitting.
무제한, unlimited drinks for a set time and a set price, is a package. A two-hour wine flow for two people is the same shape. The Atlas stores those as packages so they do not rank as a cheap glass.
You must be 19. The hotel bars in this list say so, and several of them close the room to anyone younger once the evening service starts. Tipping is not expected.
The bill
VAT is 10% for every industry, and a menu price usually already includes it. A service charge is not required by statute. Some hotels add one and some fold it in. When a venue says which, the deal note says so. The same won figure at two hotels can mean different bills.
There is no national rule against a cheaper drink for an hour, no Massachusetts-style ban, and no clock like Pennsylvania’s. The licence and the venue set the hours. A club lounge that comes with the room is a guest benefit. A promotion with an end date is a run, and the Atlas leaves both of those off.
What the Atlas does not check yet
A Seoul card does not yet know whether VAT is inside the won figure. Read the note on the card. A two-hour free-flow is a package. The first wave is the hotel bars and lounges that publish a standing window on their own sites and sell it to someone who is not staying the night. The hof that is simply inexpensive is not in the list, on purpose.
