How happy hour works in London
A legal timed discount, two cultures sitting on top of it: the pub and the restaurant aperitivo.
United Kingdom rules and habits →
The rule
A happy hour is not an irresponsible promotion under the Licensing Act mandatory conditions, unless it is built to make people drink quickly or without limit. VAT is in the price. A restaurant will usually add 12.5% service; a pub pouring at the bar usually will not. Small measures (half pint, 125 ml wine, 25 or 35 ml spirits) have to be available.
The custom
The City is a 5-to-7 pint and then a train. Soho and Shoreditch are a 5-to-9 glass that might be a cocktail. Neighborhood pubs in Hammersmith or Peckham may never use the American name. An “oyster happy hour” at £1.50 each is a London restaurant format the Atlas already lists, and it is a per-oyster price, not a 1-for-1. Late deals after 10 are less the culture than in New York and more likely to be a bar’s own quiet hour than a citywide ritual.
