HAPPY HOUR ATLAS

LOCAL CUSTOMS · MINNEAPOLIS

How happy hour works in Minneapolis

No statewide ban. Minneapolis runs a real happy hour; a suburb nearby might once have forbidden it, and a few local rules linger.

The rule

Minnesota does not prohibit happy hour statewide. Cities write a lot of liquor law themselves. Minneapolis allows a posted drink discount. Edina, next door, lifted its own ban in 2012 and still restricts two-for-one and drinking games. If a listing is actually across a city line, the city line matters.

The custom

The office hour is downtown and the North Loop, and it is dark by 5 in December, so the window feels later than the clock. Northeast and Uptown are the neighborhood version. A “patio season” from May to September is a different city from February. Hot dish is not the deal; a cocktail and a snack board is.
