How happy hour works in New York City
The deepest after-work map in the country, under a state law that allows a cheaper drink and forbids an unlimited one.
United States rules and habits →
The rule
New York allows a happy hour. ABC Law § 117-a forbids unlimited drinks for a fixed price and schemes built to imitate that. Bottomless brunch survives when the drinks are incidental to a real meal. A complimentary “buy-back” from the house sits on the wrong side of the same statute. New York City’s ordinary last call is 4 a.m., later than almost any other Atlas city.
The custom
The classic window is 5 to 7 in Midtown and the Financial District, then a second, looser one in the neighborhoods: a wine bar on the Lower East Side, an oyster deal in the West Village, a Korean fried-chicken hour in Koreatown. Offices still set the weekday rhythm. Sunday can be as busy as Thursday in the residential neighborhoods and dead in Midtown. A “$1 oyster” is the local sport; check whether it is each, and whether it is the whole afternoon or one hour.
