How happy hour works in Seattle

A strong happy-hour culture under a state that allows the discount and stops service at 2 a.m.

The rule

Washington allows priced drink specials. Alcohol may be sold from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Promotions built around over-consumption are the conduct rule, not a ban on a cheaper pint. A city could set an earlier close; Seattle has not done that citywide.

The custom

The hour is serious here because dinners are expensive and the after-work window is how people eat. Ballard, Capitol Hill, and downtown each run 3-to-6 or 4-to-6 food-and-drink menus that are closer to a small dinner than to a snack. Oysters and a glass of wine are the civic deal. Happy hour often includes food that would be a starter at full price, which is why the Atlas’s “drink plus a bite” number matters in this city.
