How happy hour works in Vancouver
British Columbia allows the hour. The custom is early, because dinner reservations are early, and the glass of wine is the deal.
The rule
BC lets prices move during the day above a per-ounce minimum that depends on the drink. A posted happy hour is legal. Serving hours are whatever the licence says.
The custom
Yaletown and the business streets do 3 to 5 or 4 to 6, and tables really do turn for 6 p.m. dinners. Main Street, Commercial Drive, and Kitsilano are looser. Oysters and a glass of local wine are the civic snack. Prices are before GST and PST and before tip. A patio in July is a different restaurant from the same room in January.
