HAPPY HOUR ATLAS

How happy hour works in Washington, DC

The most permissive drink-discount city in the Atlas, one bridge away from one of the stricter states.

The rule

The District does not set a minimum price, does not cap happy-hour length, and does not ban two-for-one or a complimentary drink. Last call is 2 a.m. Monday–Friday and 3 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Arlington and the rest of Northern Virginia are a different law: the happy hour must end by 9 p.m., and two-for-one is prohibited. A Georgetown listing and an Arlington listing are not the same product. The Atlas’s DC city is the District.

The custom

The office hour is real in Penn Quarter, Farragut, and the Hill, and it ends when people go home to other neighborhoods. U Street, Shaw, and 14th Street run a second, later version. Two-for-one is a legal format here and a common one. Do not carry that assumption across the Potomac.
