HAPPY HOUR ATLAS

LOCAL CUSTOMS · NEW ZEALAND

How happy hour works in New Zealand

New Zealand allows a posted happy hour. The drinking age is 18, the price on the menu already includes GST, and a promotion built to make people drink too much is an offence.

The custom

Auckland’s printed hour is short, usually 4 to 6, on the waterfront and in the CBD. A hotel bar, a wine bar and a steakhouse publish the same shape: a cheaper glass for a named window, then the dinner price. A tip is not expected.

You must be 18. GST is 15% and is included in the advertised price unless the venue says otherwise.

What a promotion may be

The Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act makes irresponsible promotion an offence. That includes encouraging people to drink too much, giving alcohol away, and aiming a promotion at anyone under 18. A calm posted list inside the bar is the ordinary legal case.

What the Atlas does not check yet

An Auckland card does not yet know whether a discount of 25% or more is advertised so it can be seen from the street. The price stored is the one on the venue’s own page, GST included.
